Institut Cervantes byl zřízen Španělským státem v roce 1991 s cílem šířit, vyučovat a propagovat španělskou a hispanoamerickou kulturu. Hlavní sídlo Institutu Cervantes se nachází v Madridu. Pražský Institut byl otevřen v září roku 2005.
